A couple of my new series are more whimsical and illustrative than my earlier work. My trip to the West Coast last year was inspiring in a number of ways. I saw the coastline portrayed by painter and print maker William Rice, whose work of which I have long been a fan. I also was introduced to a number of Asian-American artists utilizing a look in their work reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints. Finally, I saw the festive and colorful city of San Diego, which suggested a more vibrant and colorful palette for my work this year. As a result, the “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” and “Wetland Wonders” are an exploration of these influences, and frankly, just a whole lot of fun to paint!
